This poor soul was found on the streets of Mexicali.  We didn’t know his exact story but we knew he needed help ASAP.  We had him picked up and taken to the emergency vet in Mexicali.

Phoenix had to have his head drained (yes, you read that right) in an attempt to relieve the swelling there.  He was also a walking skeleton with wounds over the majority of his body.  It was also discovered that he was deaf.  And it is likely that he was used as a bait dog.

Phoenix was placed on pain medication as well as antibiotics. Blood test results indicated that Phoenix has liver damage, a common result of being severely emaciated.

After several days Phoenix was finally stable enough to travel to the Ranch.  Here he was treated for his injuries and we worked on fattening him up, very slowly of course.  His emotional state has taken time, and we respected Phoenix’ pace.  He has always loved the smaller dogs at the Ranch and he has come so far in his acceptance of the rest of the pack – even with the biggest of them, Rose!

“No matter how many times we burst into flames, we can always rise from the ashes. Like a phoenix from the ashes, they may defeat you, burn you, insult you, injure you, and abandon you. But they will not, shall not, and cannot destroy you.”
