“There are moments that the words don’t reach. There is suffering too terrible to name.” – It’s Quiet Uptown / Hamilton
After years and years of seeing this type of neglect, you would think that I would be used to it. I’m not. I was first notified about “Shenzi”, about a month before we actually picked her up. I couldn’t believe the condition of this poor girl, and more importantly I couldn’t believe that people saw her suffering everyday and did nothing. SHF was asked to help, but I hesitated. We are suffering financially, and once again I found myself in the horrible position of “what do I do”. After looking at our finances and available space, I hesitated for a few hours on whether or not I could accept her.
Later that day, I looked back at the picture of Shenzi, and knew that I just had to offer her help, even if it meant begging (once again) for help from Huey’s Army. A crew was sent to pick Shenzi up, but to my horror, she couldn’t be found.
Many of the cases that I get sent are literally on their last day(s). They either die from their injuries, or from infections that are a direct result of their injuries. I believed this was more than likely the case with Shenzi. I cried myself to sleep that night, believing that Shenzi was dead and that I had wasted too much time on deciding whether I could help her. These babies don’t deserve hesitation, they are living beings and deserve every chance that we humans get.
Eventually I had to move forward from Shenzi’s case.
Then weeks later I received a message stating that Shenzi had been found. I couldn’t believe it, but sure enough they had pictures to prove it was her. I was overjoyed to know that my girl was still with us. Shenzi was immediately taken to the vet for care, and stayed there while I made her travel arrangements.
On July 27, 2020, an abused and neglected Shenzi entered the gates of Huey’s Second Chance Ranch. When she leaves the Ranch for her new home, Shenzi will be healed both physically and mentally, and will have gained the self worth that she always should have known.
Cases like Shenzi’s are the norm here at Huey’s Second Chance Ranch. We spare no expense in providing these precious souls with their every need, from medical to a bit of spoiling.
